Online abuse and your family

Abuse, harassment and bullying are harsh realities of the online world. The best way to fight it is to report it. Discuss the different types of online abuse with your kids and stress that online abuse isn’t something they should try to deal with on their own. Tell your kids to trust their instincts whenever they have suspicions, and encourage them to tell you if they ever feel threatened or uncomfortable because of someone or something online.

Where to report online abuse

Concerns can be reported to your local police (911), or they can be reported to:

Types of online abuse

Thanks to the Internet’s sense of anonymity, it can be used with bad intentions. Here are some of the different ways that the Internet is misused

  • Creating or stealing an online account to impersonate, harass, bully, intimidate or threaten someone and/or that person's contacts
  • Using an account to act in sexually suggestive ways
  • Using a fake account to disguise themselves and their true malicious intentions
  • Posting images, text or links that are illegal or obscene
  • Using an account to send Spam

All of the above forms of online abuse should be reported!
