Online lingo is the shorthand of the Internet, and is used in chat rooms, emails, instant messaging conversations and cell phone text messages. Essentially, words and phrases are turned into acronyms to speed up typing. Why write “parent over shoulder” in a chat conversation when typing “POS” is so much quicker?
Online lingo is often used by teens and tweens to make “coded” messages that the prying eyes of parents can’t understand. Most of the abbreviations are harmless, but some kids use lingo to secretly discuss topics like sex and drugs. New abbreviations are created everyday — you have to stay current!
