Surfing Safely at Home and in the Classroom

Safe Surf contains online safety challenges for children in grades five and six. The site was designed for use by children at home or in the classroom.

At Home

Children and their parents can complete the challenges together, increase their joint knowledge of online safety issues and develop an agreed upon Online Safety Promise for their family. We encourage you to recommend the site as a take-home activity for your students to complete with their parents.

In the Classroom

Safe Surf can also be used effectively in the classroom to educate students in grades five and six about online safety issues. Depending on your access to computers and how you want your students to use the website, you can use a variety of approaches in terms of student access/usage. For example, you can have students working in pairs, individually or you can present the site via a LCD projector and review the site’s content with your entire class at one time or in stages.

The What’s Online section contains background information on each of the online subject areas. Stay Safe Online features question and answer challenges that will engage students and test their knowledge of the online safety issues.

Safe Surf Unit Plan

The Safe Surf Unit Plan has been created to help teachers of grades 5 and 6 explore with students the various dangers they may encounter during their online experiences. The lessons begin with the website’s purpose and a listing of connections to the Alberta Education curriculum. This is followed by a logical sequence of lesson plans for classroom use, created by and for Alberta teachers.
