How to Use this Site
YouthLink Calgary’s Safe Surf site is a space where parents and children ages 10 to 12 can learn about online safety together. As a family, you’ll learn about 7 popular ways children use the Internet, take 7 online challenges to test your Safe Surf smarts and then create your family’s own online safety promise.
Parents and children
Working together to read through the 7 learning pages and complete the 7 corresponding quizzes should about 30 minutes. The site will remember your computer and what you have completed, so you don’t have to complete all the activities at once.
The Parents section of this site contains in-depth information, resources and steps you can take to make your kids online experience as safe and enjoyable as possible.
Teachers and students
YouthLink Calgary’s Safe Surf site can be used to educate your students about online safety. Depending on your access to computers in your classroom and how you want your students to use the activities, you can use a variety of approaches.
- Students could work at completing the activities individually
- Students could work in pairs
- Your class could be divided into seven groups (the number of different activity areas on the site) and each group could complete those activities and report back to the class on what they learned
- You could review the site as an all-class activity, demonstrating the different site features and completing the challenges as a group, with you leading the discussion
Note: Reading through the seven learning pages and completing the seven corresponding quizzes should take between 30 – 40 minutes. The site will remember users’ computers and what they have completed, so you don’t have to complete all the activities all at once.
