Helping Children Learn About Healthy Relationships
This programme, which has been approved by Alberta Learning, has been designed for teachers of grades four and 5, and addresses specific outcomes from the Health and Life Skills curriculum.
Objectives
The primary objectives of the Healthy Relationships programme are to promote healthy relationships in our communities and to prevent and stop child abuse.
Programme Description
Students will learn about the main types of abuse, how abuse can affect everyone in our society, and how to recognize what to do if someone they know is being abused. Students will learn about the importance of identifying feelings and emotions, strategies for dealing with anger, and the impact of healthy and unhealthy communication styles in relationships with others, including family members and classmates.
This manual is designed for presenters who 'don’t know what to say' or who don’t know all the answers.
Information for Teachers
Teachers will find background material on abuse, including the effects abuse may have on students, information on handling disclosures or the possibility of child abuse, and suggestions for discussing the topic safely in the classroom. Plans for six classroom sessions are provided with numerous activity options, as well as a video in which three children describe their experiences of abuse.
Province-wide Training Workshops for Teachers
Training workshops for teachers who wish to utilize this programme can be arranged through the Centre. There must be a minimum of 10 teachers or administrators participating before a workshop will be organized. While the materials for the programme can be ordered for $45, they are provided free to teachers who take the workshop.
The manual and video for this programme can be ordered directly from Youthlink Calgary: The Calgary Police Interpretive Centre.
To enquire about a workshop or to order materials, please call and leave a message at 403-206-8245.
Where’s the Evidence?
A forensic science programme geared to the evidence and investigative unit in the grade six science curriculum.
The main objectives of the programme are to stimulate an interest and appreciation for forensic science and investigation techniques. This programme is important because it instills a respect for policing.
Programme Description
Currently, the programme offers two crime scenarios. One is a modern homicide, which has proven to be a challenging and exciting programme for students. The second, and the newest scenario, is based on an Internet luring incident. There are alternate endings "A" and "B" for each crime.
After teachers have booked a half-day at the Centre, they receive a kit of materials about five weeks before their visit. The materials introduce the students to a number of different forensic activities, as well as allow them to do some preliminary investigation of the crime for selected study. After forming a theory about what they think happens and who is guilty, the students come to the Centre where they will go through workstations to compare physical evidence.
Highly Engaging
Teachers consistently give this programme a high rating and children find it highly engaging. Teachers who complete many of the in-class activities and visit the Centre with their students will have met all the outcomes for the grade six evidence and investigation unit.
