Program/Collection Assistant

With assistance from the Federal Government’s Young Canada Works program, YouthLink Calgary Police Interpretive Centre is seeking a university student planning a career in heritage who is returning to school in the fall. The Program/Collection Assistant position is available from May 28nd - August 31st, 2012.

Requirements: At least three years of university in a degree program, preferably in museum studies, although related disciplines may be considered; proficiency in Microsoft Word: Prior experience with the SMART board is beneficial, excellent communication and interpersonal skills; be a self starter. Those with some museum related experience and experience with youth will be given preference. The position involves both leading and running programs related to our mandate and helping to improve our historical collection storage through basic collections management projects.

The Program/Collections Assistant will undertake the following tasks:

  • Analysis of the summer visitor surveys collected in 2012 to appreciate how significant the visitor experience is in a museum operation. We are involved in social media (Facebook, Twitter, Google+, LinkedIn, FourSquare, blog) which will give the student a forum to help us create awareness of our programs and increase our audience.
  • The students will learn how to interpret our exhibitions and create meaningful visitor experiences. They will have the opportunity to learn how to deliver and input the programming content on a SMART board. Involvement in the delivery of programs over the summer months will help the student determine how children react to a museum environment and how programming can support established exhibits and our mission.
  • From May 22nd-June 15th they will have the opportunity to observe delivery of the existing school programs which is run by professional teachers.
  • Management of programs for visiting youth and children’s groups over the summer months including liaising with agencies that may have booked.
  • Review evening programs that are offered to youth in the school year and determine which areas of the programming need to be updated and re-written based on the needs of the groups.
  • Run and evaluate the CSI Calgary birthday party program.
  • Work on Collections management projects as required. Priorities for 2012 include: helping with the artifact shelf inventory, inputting data into Past Perfect, creating a finding aid for a component of the archival collection and aiding with the re-housing of the photographic negative collection. The student will have an opportunity to learn about basic museum storage issues which involve critical thinking, planning and organizing to best maximize the resources available

Summer Camp Counselor

YouthLink Calgary Police Interpretive Centre is looking for dedicated, responsible and enthusiastic camp counselors for our Summer Camp program.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise children in a variety of settings to ensure a safe environment
  • Deliver curriculum based on YouthLink Calgary’s Core Messages
  • Plan, lead, and participate in daily play and/or activities
  • Create a positive rapport with all campers
  • Be aware of camper dietary/medical needs
  • Keep accurate records, incident reports; report immediately to camp director
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Skills and Knowledge

  • High energy, self-starter
  • Experience working with children. Experience in a camp setting preferred
  • Excellent people skills and friendly, responsible, service-oriented attidute
  • Strong communication and teamwork abilities
  • Able to problem solve effectively

Other Qualifications

  • Valid First Aid / CPR certification
  • Able to pass CPS Enhanced Criminal Records Check
  • Candidates should be prepared for daily physical activity with the campers
